Moondrop's Discdream 2 Ultra is a portable CD player with a well-engineered servo architecture, based on a pair of Cirrus Logic CS43131 DAC chips to deliver the best possible sound. It has been designed to be as versatile as possible, whether used as a portable CD player, as a CD player in a more complete installation or as a DAC/headphone amplifier when connected to a computer.
Moondrop Discdream 2 Ultra: CNC aluminum chassis
The Discdream 2 Ultra features a clamshell design perfectly suited to portable devices, reducing the risk of damage when discs are inserted. It's made from CNC-cut aluminium alloy, with a carefully polished surface and textured finish for a stylish appearance.
Moondrop Discdream 2 Ultra: Solid servo architecture
The quality of a CD player is largely dependent on the quality of its servo architecture, which is why Moondrop has selected the best possible components. The motor ensures a perfectly stable rotation speed, the laser read head has excellent tracking and the CD player is equipped with a buffer memory and a physical damping system to limit the impact of the player's vibrations on the final rendering.
Moondrop Discdream 2 Ultra: Cirrus Logic DAC chips
In a digital player such as a CD player, the quality of the output is largely dependent on the quality of the digital/analogue conversion. That's why the Discdream 2 Ultra incorporates 2 Cirrus Logic CS43131 chips, offering a balanced analogue output, ensuring crystal-clear reproduction with impeccable fidelity.
Moondrop Discdream 2 Ultra: An audio circuit with quality components
In order to best accompany the selected DAC chips, the Discdream 2 Ultra incorporates an independent power supply circuit equipped with 7 linear voltage regulators as well as a set of Ruby electrolytic capacitors and 3 NDK crystal oscillators, all with a view to delivering a sound that's both warm and free from impurities.
Moondrop Discdream 2 Ultra: Headphone outputs
The Discdream 2 Ultra has two output interfaces for headphones:
The 4.4mm jack interface provides a fully balanced output, delivering 4Vrms / 222mW output power under a 32Ω load. It can easily drive most earphones as well as full-size, high-impedance headphones, including even some planar magnetic headphones.
The 3.5 mm jack interface offers a standard 2Vrms stereo output, suitable for most headphones and earphones.
Moondrop Discdream 2 Ultra: Multi-function 3.5 mm jack line output
Furthermore, the Discdream 2 Ultra has a 3.5 mm jack line output that can also be used as an optical output, offering great flexibility of use. You can, for example, use this output purely as an analogue output and connect an external power amplifier to it to drive the most demanding headphones, but you can also use this output digitally to connect a DAC or similar.
Moondrop Discdream 2 Ultra: Use as a DAC / Headphone amplifier
Finally, in the spirit of flexibility, the Discdream 2 Ultra can also be connected to a PC for use as a DAC/headphone amplifier. In this configuration, it supports a signal up to PCM 32bit 384kHz and DSD256. It's also worth noting that no driver is required to use it, whether under Windows or Mac OS.
