DAC Headphone Amplifier ES9038Q2M XMOS XUF208 32bit 768kHz DSD512
FiiO's K5 Pro is a high-performance desktop DAC and headphone amplifier combo, demonstrating exemplary design in the service of an audio reproduction marked by great transparency, richness and precision.
With the K5 Pro you can enjoy an extremely realistic and detailed music experience, revealing all the subtleties of your music. The K5 Pro bridges the gap between your computer, active speakers, and headphones in an extremely simple way to transport you to your favorite artists.
The circuits of the K5 Pro benefit from an improved clock management system and excellent decoding capability. For this purpose, an XMOS XUF208 USB interface is used. It incorporates a brand new clock synchronization system and supports high sampling rates up to 32bit 768kHz PCM and DSD512.
Regardless of the equipment used, digital audio inputs have the advantage of inheriting the integrity of the transmitted signal to faithfully reproduce it. The K5 Pro allows you to enjoy digital audio with its S/PDIF Coaxial and Optical Toslink inputs supporting sample rates up to 192kHz. The K5 Pro can be used with many audio players and digital interfaces.
The K5 Pro reaches new heights in audio reproduction with its high-performance ES9038Q2M DAC using a 32bit conversion architecture and offering rich, detailed sound reproduction. Compared to the previous generation, distortion has been reduced by 50% and line output crosstalk increased by 6dB with better channel separation and 3dB improved dynamic range.
The K5 Pro's amplifier stage is no slouch against the competition, with its circuitry offering enough space to integrate the components needed for excellent analog amplification. This 4-stage circuit is capable of delivering incredible sonic fidelity with the use of a second-order LPF, analog volume control and voltage amplification. Each part of this circuit works in perfect harmony offering an excellent dynamic range and a very nice resolution.
The volume control of the K5 Pro uses an NJRC NW1195A analog chip offering a very low output noise measured at -118dB as well as the possibility to adjust the sound level in 0.5dB steps. The combination of this volume control with the excellent AOP JFET TI TPA6120 and OPA1642 contributes greatly to the quality of reproduction of the K5 Pro.
The FiiO K5 Pro uses a specially designed 15V DC power supply to reduce the noise level. The received DC signal is filtered by a second power supply which then independently powers the amplifier circuitry and other audio circuitry. This design effectively eliminates power supply ripple and minimizes power supply crosstalk between the two main sections of its circuitry. This architecture allows for greater stability and lower noise, which are essential for high quality audio reproduction.
The K5 Pro incorporates an ADC, allowing it to take advantage of an RCA line input with adjustable volume level. It reconstructs the analog volume curve to allow for smooth and accurate adjustment while eliminating unwanted noise and potential balance problems. This design also allows many different headphone models with different sensitivities to be used with the K5 Pro.
The source selection and the gain level adjustment are simply done thanks to two switches on the front of the K5 Pro. For the gain, the device offers 3 settings: low, medium and high. This setting allows the K5 Pro to be used with the vast majority of headphones and earphones on the market for comfortable volume listening. When a low gain is used, a fully hardware circuit is used so that the dynamic range and overall audio fidelity are not altered.
The all-aluminum case is CNC polished several times and carefully finished with an anodized and sandblasted treatment. It effectively protects the K5 Pro's circuitry from dust and impact while giving it a clean, modern look. In addition, its compact size allows it to be easily integrated into a complete system.
The K5 Pro's massive, beautifully integrated metal knob on the front panel allows for comfortable control of the volume level. The circular LED indicator surrounding this volume knob lights up in different colors depending on the sample rate of the file being played, while complementing the sobriety of the case with a touch of color.
The selection of source and gain is therefore done simply via the switches on the front panel, which are clearly and legibly marked. The meanings of the silk-screen prints are as follows:
3 Gain level :
3 Inputs :
The finely tuned headphone amplifier circuitry increases the output power of the AOP TPA6120 by more than 60% for a total power of 1.5W at 32Ω and up to 20Vpp at 300Ω. The K5 Pro will fit most headphones without worry, whether they have low or high impedance.
While it has a full range of digital inputs, the K5 Pro also features an RCA line input. This is not only more robust than a 3.5mm line input, but it also allows you to enjoy a better audio resolution. The RCA line output signal is adjustable up to a maximum of 2Vrms allowing the K5 Pro to be used with both active speakers and external amplifiers.
To use the RCA line output, unplug your headphones connected to the 6.35mm jack.
The K5 Pro can work with a DAP using a USB-C / Micro USB to USB-B adapter. This allows your DAP to function as a player and take advantage of the K5 Pro's decoding quality and ability to accompany high impedance headphones.
