The Topping D50s is the direct evolution of the D50, a proven DAC that is particularly appreciated by many customers and audiophiles. While this new model is largely based on the design and architecture of its little brother, the main evolution is in connectivity since the D50s now offers Bluetooth support. The device can now also be controlled via remote control and its audio performance has been revised upwards.
For the rest, we find all the tip components of the previous version such as two ESS ES9038Q2M conversion chips, a latest generation USB interface module XMOS U208 or OP1612 operating amplifiers, all integrated in a beautiful and robust aluminum housing. Topping once again offers us an extremely qualitative material whose design aims at excellence.
The D50s is one of the best components on the market for high quality rendering and an advanced audio experience. Thus, the core of the device is composed of two ESS ES9038Q2M conversion chips operating in parallel so that all channels benefit from a detailed signal and are processed with precision. In addition, these chips, combined with the other components of the device, allow the D50s to support high sampling rates up to PCM 32bit 768kHz, DSD512 and DoP64.
For its USB interface, the D50s uses an excellent second generation XMOS XU208 XMOS chip. The brand is renowned for the performance of its components, ensuring accurate and rich reproduction. In addition, this interface allows the USB input of the D50s to support files up to 32bit PCM 768kHz and DSD512.
The D50s comes with drivers Thesycon custom optimized for Windows, providing better support for native DSD. This is therefore a perfectly suitable choice for music lovers who love the very high definition.
If the D50s is Hi-Res certified, it also benefits from Hi-Res Wireless (wireless) certification as well as Sony LDAC transmission protocol support, ensuring the best performance in terms of bit rate, stability and sampling rates supported for Bluetooth. The Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity of the device is enabled by a CRS8675 chip supporting LDAC, AAC, SBC, aptX, aptXLL and aptX-HD protocols. The Bluetooth stream is decoded by the DAC ES9038Q2M. Bluetooth can be disabled in the D50s menus.
The D50s is also equipped with two OPA1612 SoundPlus operating amplifiers and a TI LME49720, forming the device's low-pass filter. These PDOs offer excellent performance and ensure lossless signal transmission. The LME49720 operational amplifier is mounted on a DIP8 bracket and can therefore be changed to modify the sound of the device.
All the components of the D50s are integrated in a beautiful and robust Aluminium case, CNC machined in a single metal part. While this case offers a sober and modern aesthetic, it also has very good mechanical properties and greatly limits the impact of interference on the D50s circuits.
A practical feature, the D50s is able to switch on and off automatically depending on whether or not it receives a valid signal. Of course, this feature can still be disabled in the device menus. Similarly, the display of the device can be set to turn off after 30 seconds without any action taken, to avoid the visual discomfort that can result from an on screen. The brightness of the screen can also be adjusted.
The D50s has two unique buttons on its front panel to control all the camera's features. The first is a simple button, the second is a 4-way joystick. The device is also delivered with an infrared remote control, allowing remote control.
On the connector side, the D50s from Topping offers a complete panel to adapt to the vast majority of uses. It includes Coaxial, Optical, USB and a connector to improve Bluetooth signal reception. At the output the device has a stereo RCA connection.
The D50s is therefore a DAC but also offers an adjustable volume. It can therefore operate as a DAC combo + preamplifier and be directly connected to an amplifier or active speakers.
The Topping D50s supports the OTG standard. It is therefore possible to connect a compatible smartphone or Android tablet to it to send your audio files directly. For iOS devices, it is necessary to use the Camera Adapter Lightning to USB.
