The NOS version of the Audio-GD R-1 benefits from new features and a number of improvements, with the aim of providing ever more precise and rich sound reproduction.
With the R-1 NOS, Audio-GD offers us a new version of the famous R2R1, this time in NOS mode, which optimizes the pure NOS mode and delivers an extremely clean musical sound. This evolution retains all the musical qualities of its ancestor: front interface for setting filters, level of oversampling, the PLL strategy / HDMI synchronization without opening the unit.
This DAC is based on R2R Ladder technology with FPGA DSP correction. Like all R2R systems, this DAC offers a formidable price-performance ratio, always combined with the technical choices that have made Audio-GD a key player in the high-definition converter market today. This device is particularly well suited to the Audio-GD NFB1 AMP preamplifier and Audio-GD Precision 3 amplifier.
A discrete R2R DAC is acknowledged to be superior to an integrated R2R chip assembly such as the PCM1704K or AD5791, offering a more natural high-midrange listening experience. The technical advantages are that R2R DACs filter out clock noise not found in analog signals and R2R DACs are less sensitive to jitter on 16bit definitions. The analog signal is theoretically more accurate than a DAC based on Delta Sigma technology.
The FPGA DSP in the Audio-GD R-1 DAC overcomes the inaccuracy of resistors beyond 16/21bit. The result is high precision even in high definition 24bit 384khz. These technical qualities also include: better processing of SPDIF inputs (coaxial, optical) than the usual integrated interfaces (WM8505, DIR9001), thanks to faster computing power and FIFO buffer stages that drastically reduce jitter.
Based on over 20 years of expertise, Audio-GD excels in creating analog stages without feedback. The R-1 DAC's output circuit benefits from this long and incisive research, with stages made entirely of sorted and matched discrete transistors. There are no surface-mounted components and a minimum of components in the signal path. The final buffer stages are made of high-bandwidth single-ended FET transistors on two parallel stages, guaranteeing low output impedance. This last part has no capacitors in the signal path. Of course, this converter also features high-speed, high-current ACSS outputs. In the spirit of "less is better", there are no relays on the analog circuit.
A good DAC is nothing without a quality power supply producing the lowest possible parasitic noise. The R-1 features a triple-wound, low-radiation R-Core transformer for the digital, left and right analog stages. Each voltage is distributed over a total of 13 pure Class A regulation groups, producing very low noise and fast impulse response.
