Digital Audio Player DAP Android Hi-Res 2x AK4499EQ Exynos 7872 XMOS Bluetooth WiFi 32bit 768kHz DSD512
The FiiO M15 is a resolutely high-end portable audio player (DAP), integrating the best of today's components to ensure unbeatable sound reproduction. Whether you are at home or on the go, the M15 will accompany you in your listening and allow you to rediscover your favourite tunes.
Overall, the Fiio M15 manages to best just about any dongle or phone you would use instead of it and handily so. So I am going to put it on my Recommended list.
The AK4499EQ is the flagship of the 3rd generation DAC AKM. With 4 channels per chip, an improved architecture and the use of the LSI manufacturing process, these chips offer incredible performance. The DAC is capable of decoding sample rates up to 32bit 768kHz and DSD512 and offers a signal-to-noise ratio of 140dB and a THD+N of -124dB.
When used in USB DAC mode, the M15 takes advantage of the performance of its XMOS XUF208 USB interface. This contributes to the quality of DAP playback and also supports sample rates up to 32bit 768kHz and DSD512.
The M15's Bluetooth receiver chip, a Qualcomm CSR8675, the manufacturer's premium model, enables high-quality Bluetooth transmission. It enables stable and fast broadcasting, including support for the aptX, aptX, LDAC and HWA codecs for superior listening quality.
Navigation within the M15 interface is perfectly fluid, using an Exynos 7872 processor. This one integrates 2 A73 cores and 4 A53 cores. 3GB of RAM are associated with it with also 64GB of storage and the possibility to add a Micro SD card (up to 2TB). The M15 also allows dual band 2.4/5GHz WiFi transmission.
The M15 incorporates two custom NDK femtosecond oscillators, ensuring a phase noise of only -140dBc/Hz @ 1kHz offset. These oscillators are coupled with a 3rd generation FPGA to further lower the jitter and provide the DAC with the most accurate clock signal.
This 3rd generation FPGA specially developed by FiiO uses more powerful algorithms and more accurate clocks to reduce jitter as much as possible.
The entire system benefits from a high-quality design, using only high-end components. These include ultra low noise resistors with a tolerance of 0.1% or dedicated audio capacitors (4 low-loss polymer tantalum capacitors, 4 Panasonic electrodeless film capacitors and 8 film capacitors). The M15 also has a large energy reserve thanks to 28220µF on low-loss polymer capacitors and 5100µF on high-voltage capacitors.
The M15 has no trouble competing with or surpassing the best smartphones on the market. It features a thick 8-layer PCB with gold circuitry, optimizing available space and canceling interference between the analog and digital stages, including independent shielding and 2.4GHz wave-absorbing material. Heat dissipation is also optimized thanks to Silicone and Graphene thermal conductors, as well as Copper-Nickel-Zinc alloy heat sinks.
FiiO's DAP uses a symmetrical architecture to ensure incredibly detailed playback without sacrificing dynamics. Within this architecture, two high-precision low noise PDOs OPA221 for the low-pass filter, four PDOs OPA1612 for the IV conversion, and one PDO OPA1622 for the amplification of each channel.
For the first time, FiiO integrates Active Servo Power technology into the final amplifier stage, allowing you to tailor the output power according to your preferences. When used with EMI, you can set the M15 to optimize its noise level. On the contrary, if you wish to use 300Ω headphones, you can activate the Big Driver Mode to take advantage of a large power reserve.
The M15 is ready to go with any helmet, being able to deliver a lot of power. Under 32Ω, the DAP can output 490mW asymmetrically and 800mW symmetrically. Under 300Ω, it can deliver 70mW asymmetrical and 275mW symmetrical.
The M15 offers a restitution of great transparency and depth thanks to a noise threshold of 2.1µF, a distortion level of 0.0004% and an SNR of 122dB.
With a 7490mAh battery, the M15 has a long battery life of more than 15 hours in playback and up to 1800 hours in standby. In addition, the device supports qC2.0, MTK PE and USB PD fast charging.
The M15 represents the 5th generation of the design already used by models such as the Q1 Mark II, the K3 or the K5 Pro. The right and left sides are concave to make it easier to handle.
The ADC reconstruction curve used by the M15 solves problems often associated with analog potentiometers such as a lack of imbalance in the balance between the left and right channels. The volume knob is also equipped with a LED whose light intensity can be adjusted.
The M15 is equipped with a beautiful 5.15" Corning Gorilla Glass IPS display with a resolution of 1440x720px, a pixel density of 312PPI and capable of displaying 16.7 million colours.
FiiO's DAP has a button on its side that can be customized according to your needs, for quick access to your favorite features.
The M15 supports 8x AQA file decoding for exceptional audio quality.
