With the Playmate 2, Burson Audio unveils an improved version of its versatile Playmate 1 Hi-Fi device, featuring an ESS ES9038 DAC chip, USB input with XMOS interface, Class A headphone amplifier function and stereo preamplifier. Its amplification stage is made up of DIP8-mounted NE5532 OPAs. The playmate 2 is capable of decoding up to PCM 32bit 768kHz and DSD up to DSD512. It can also accompany a wide range of headphones, thanks to its 3W output power. What's more, its new CNC-machined aluminum chassis acts as an integral heatsink to dissipate heat efficiently.
The highlight of the Playmate 2 is its high-performance ESS ES9038Q2M DAC. This ESS-designed chip performs extremely high-quality digital-to-analog conversion. Based on ESS HyperStream technology, it ensures excellent dynamic range, very low distortion and, of course, rich, accurate sound reproduction. The Playmate 2 can therefore handle files up to PCM 32bit 768kHz and DSD up to DSD512.
Coupled with a USB-C input and a USB XMOS interface, the Playmate 2 lets you enjoy your digital audio sources such as a computer or your smartphone.
Burson Audio's Playmate 2 incorporates four NE5532 dual AOPs, featuring very low noise and distortion, as well as high slew rate. Mounted on DIP8 brackets, they are easily replaceable if you wish to integrate Burson Audio's own V6 VIVID or V6 CLASSIC AOPs (sold separately), for example.
The Playmate 2's two front-panel headphone outputs (Jack 6.35mm and Jack 3.5mm), combined with high power output, enable the device to be used with a wide range of headphones. It's equally at home with low-impedance headphones or more demanding high-impedance models.
The Jack 3.5mm output is compatible with microphones, a considerable advantage especially for those wishing to use the Playmate 2 for PC gaming. An optical Toslink input on the rear of the case also makes it easy to connect a console, for example.
With its stereo RCA pre-out, the Playmate 2 transforms itself into a preamplifier, so it can accompany active loudspeakers incorporating their own amplification system, or allow you to benefit from an external amplifier.
The Playmate 2 circuit is powered by the Burson Audio Max Current Power Supply (MCPS), which corrects the problems of conventional power supplies. The MCPS uses transistors rather than transformers to greatly reduce circuit resistance. As a result, the Playmate can draw instantaneous current at any time to power the circuit as required. The result is a real gain in detail and dynamics. What's more, the MCPS power supply, rather than using numerous capacitors, increases the operating frequency from 50-60Hz to 170kHz, a frequency inaudible to the human ear, to considerably limit noise.
Burson Audio's Playmate 2 case, with its sober design, is easy to integrate into your Hi-Fi system. Its design makes it the perfect ally for placement on a desk, for example. What's more, its casing acts as an integral radiator, enabling it to dissipate heat very efficiently. In addition, the front panel features a screen showing volume level, selected input and sampling rate of the file being played.
