Discrete Headphone Amplifier
Sparkos offers with the Aries Base a high-end headphone amplifier for audiophiles looking for the best sound quality. It is based on an architecture composed only of discrete components to ensure exceptional performance.
The main audio circuit of the Aries Base is on the right side of the unit and consists mainly of two pairs of SS2590 discrete PDOs developed by the brand. The latter constitute the input and output stages, between which the impressive switched relay attenuator is revealed. No capacitors are used on the audio signal circuit and DC potential differences are managed by a DC servo.
The Aries Base power supply is regulated by a pair of discrete voltage regulators and the toroidal transformer is shielded with Mu Metal shielding to significantly reduce the magnetic field and humming. The AC input is universal and can operate with 120V and 240V. The signal is the ground of all inputs are switched with high quality latching relays. Switching the ground of the inputs (rather than simply connecting them together) will prevent ground loops from forming between the different connected devices.
The microcontroller that controls the attenuator and operates the screen will switch to standby mode when music is playing to further reduce potential noise.
The volume and balance controls use a switched reed relay attenuator. The choice of Reed relays greatly reduces the noise of "clicks" when relays are switched. The attenuator has 64 steps, one step corresponding to 1 dB. The film resistors used in the attenuator but also and generally on the audio circuit offer a tolerance of only 0.1%. The output impedance of the attenuator is 180Ω consistently in order to achieve a very low level of resistance noise (Johnson noise) at any volume level. Relay attenuators also provide better consistency between the volume levels of the left and right channels, essential for a true headphone listening experience.
The Aries Base offers a classic and efficient connection system that allows it to be easily integrated into an audio system. The input includes a balanced XLR and two stereo RCAs on the rear panel and a 3.5mm jack on the front panel. On the output side the Aries Base has a stereo RCA, a balanced XLR, as well as a 6.35mm Jack headphone output at the front. All connectors are gold plated, ensuring good conductivity and oxidation resistance.
The Sparkos Aries Base' simple front panel features a touch screen for intuitive access to source selection and gain control. It also displays the volume attenuation level and the balance, which are adjusted using the two massive rotary knobs.
