With this kit, Ian Canada is offering a socket to replace the internal clock of the ARES 12th DAC from Denafrips. Indeed, one of the major differences between the ARES and more expensive DACs from the same brand is the quality of the clock, for example the PONTUS uses a TCXO clock and the TERMINATOR an OCXO clock. So, by modifying this precise point, the margin of improvement of the ARES is impressive, allowing it to offer a superior sound rendering with much better spatialization while preserving the typical timbre of R2R conversion.
Please note that any modification to your device will invalidate its warranty. If you are not fully experienced in soldering and modifying printed circuits, you should call in a professional.
1. Remove the two default SMT clocks from the PCB using a hot air soldering station. Take care not to damage the PCB and other components.
2. Fit the 7 mm mount where the mounting screw used to be. Place the KIT PCB on the bracket, ensuring that it is centred. Tighten the screw to secure the PCB in place.
3. Solder the three coaxial cables to the 6 PCB pads, exactly as shown in the photo. Signal terminals first, then earth wires. The pads are not very strong. Take care not to exert any force on the cables.
4. Switch on the DAC (rear and front), make sure the blue LED on the KIT PCB is lit. Switch off the unit, fit the two clocks (not supplied in this KIT) into the XO sockets. Make sure that the frequencies match the positions of the XO. Pay particular attention to the orientation of the clocks, as incorrect installation orientation may damage them.
