With the Zero RED, Truthear has once again teamed up with Crinacle, renowned for its expertise in IEM, to offer a new version of the fruit of their previous collaboration. These in-ear monitors retain the dynamic dual-driver structure of their predecessors, but improve on it to offer an even lower level of distortion. Furthermore, the frequency response curve is also slightly different, offering punchier bass while preserving the characteristic neutrality of the previous model.
The Zero REDs feature a dual dynamic driver configuration, 10mm and 7.8mm in diameter respectively, to deliver a smooth, detailed sound thanks to a sophisticated magnetic circuit structure combined with liquid crystal polymer (LCP) diaphragms and flexible polyurethane suspensions.
The 7.8mm dynamic driver responsible for midrange and high frequencies uses an ultra-fine CCAW voice coil, with the aim of making the driver as light as possible. The result is greater sensitivity to high frequencies, offering a clear, delicate soundstage. Conversely, the 10mm dynamic driver is responsible for low frequencies, and uses a weighted voice coil to reduce the resonant frequency for clear delineation of each driver's role in the frequency band.
Although the Zero RED drivers are similar to those of the Zero, the internal structure has been completely redesigned to offer better measurements while maintaining an equivalent frequency response. Furthermore, the diaphragm structure has been adjusted to deliver slightly more bass and even lower non-linear distortion.
The acoustic nozzle structure of the Zero REDs benefits from a DLP (Digital Light Processing) 3D printing design, enabling an otherwise impossible level of assembly finesse to be achieved. In this way, Truthear was able to precisely design its internal cavity and acoustic nozzles to get the best out of both drivers, efficiently guiding the waves produced by them.
Building on the Zero's excellent measurements, the RED version further optimizes the latter to reduce non-linear distortion at a higher sound pressure level of 94dB. The frequency response target curve is similar to that of its predecessors, but adopts the CRINACLE IEF_Neutral target curve for the frequency band above 1000Hz, offering a rendering that conforms to HRTF characteristics while being warm and natural.
Furthermore, the Zero REDs are relatively neutral to the ear, and special care has been taken to avoid phase distortion, a recurrent problem in earphones with multiple drivers and responsible for unnatural sound reproduction.
The Zero REDs come with a 1.20m Jack 3.5mm to CIEM 0.78mm 2-pin jack cable with 4 strands of silver-plated copper, guaranteeing high-quality signal transmission without external interference.
"Folks, we have another reference class IEM for hardly any money. Yes, there is a bit different tuning but whether that is better or not, is hard to determine given the uncertainty in measurements, and listening preference at granular level. I am happy with either but like the lower distortion in RED. I could not reduce distortion the original Zero. So the RED gets my vote as to the better of the two by small margin.
