Speaker Driver Subwoofer 800W 2+2Ω 88dB 25Hz - 750Hz Ø30.5cm
The Dayton Audio RSS315HE-22 is a subwoofer with high linear excursion capability, producing incredible bass response, with unrivalled detail, control and SPL capability. Designed for maximum linear excursion with thorough inductance control, this massive subwoofer produces unparalleled bass extension and high output with low distortion. Optimized for small speakers and featuring two 2Ω voice coils, the RSS315HE-22 is flexible enough to add breathtaking bass to an audio system.
To maintain precise control of the diaphragm when pushed to high excursion levels, the RSS315HE-22 features an incredibly powerful motor. A stack of 3 high-energy Y-35 ferrite magnets is used to provide the necessary force, while leaving enough space for the coil to move without impacting the backplate. A copper ring and thick aluminum sleeve minimize stored energy and reduce inductance as the coil moves through the motor. This massive motor allows the RSS315HE-22 to produce extremely low distortion and accurate response, even when pushed to the limits of its 50mm excursion (peak-to-peak).
The diaphragm is driven by a 3" diameter coil, wound on a thick aluminum support capable of dissipating enough heat to support up to 800W RMS. A spiral in the support minimizes eddy currents induced in any conductive support, further reducing inductance and distortion. Openings through the coil support and pole piece ensure ample airflow through the coil while minimizing disturbance, enabling quiet operation when displacement is high. In addition, the copper ring and aluminum sleeve improve heat transfer to the pole piece and magnetic assembly, absorbing coil heat more effectively. All this gives the RSS315HE-22 the ability to reliably handle high power ratings without suffering from significant power compression, even when pushed to maximum for extended periods.
To support a maximum linear excursion of 25mm, the RSS315HE-22 is equipped with a flexible surround that allows ample linear movement and keeps the coil centered even under high stress. This large, custom-machined surround holds the diaphragm in place and allows for significant movement without constricting or distorting. Two progressive spiders with tinsel wires support the diaphragm and coil. These spiders are optimized to start restricting movement just as the driver reaches its limits, to avoid damage in the event of excessive dynamic peaks. What's more, these spiders have plenty of space between them to keep the coil centered in the narrow magnetic space. Every aspect of the RSS315HE-22 surround has been designed to reliably deliver extreme excursion capability without adding significant distortion.
To blend in visually with the other Reference Series subwoofers, the RSS315HE-22 uses a rigid, anodized aluminum diaphragm and dust-cover dome. The diaphragm is significantly thicker to withstand the force applied by such a powerful motor, and to increase mass to achieve a low resonant frequency (Fs). Thanks to aluminum's rigidity and natural damping properties, any breakup is pushed well beyond the badnwidth, giving the RSS315HE-22 an exceptionally flat response, even in the low-mids. What's more, aluminum is an excellent conductor of heat, transforming the entire diaphragm and dust cover into a large heat sink that efficiently dissipates heat from the coil to better control power compression.
The specifications of the RSS315HE-22 have been balanced to suit a wide range of uses. Its low-frequency extension makes it ideal for use in a subwoofer, in both HiFi and home cinema systems. Thanks to its compact dimensions, the RSS315HE-22 is also an excellent choice for use in a high-performance car audio system. What's more, the dual 2Ω coils allow 2Ω stereo or 1Ω mono wiring configurations when connecting to a professional audio amplifier or high-current car audio, in order to extract maximum power. For home audio applications, simply wire the coils in series for a more common 4Ω load and better amplifier compatibility. All Reference Series HE speakers are designed to deliver astonishing low-frequency response with incredible power, impact and detail.
