Accurate measurement is a crucial element in the design of audio equipment. Thus, the DATS (Dayton Audio Test System) V3 is able to provide highly reliable audio data measurements for any transducer or speaker.

The DATS V3 works with your computer and comprehensive test software to measure the impedance response of a loudspeaker and obtain a complete and detailed set of Thiele/Small parameters describing the capabilities of your loudspeaker. Its use is extremely simple since it is enough to connect your loudspeaker in a traditional way then to launch the measurement from the graphical interface. The DATS V3 then sends electrical signals to the loudspeaker to define its impedance and produce a high-resolution graph of 30,000 data points, without any further hardware required.

V3, well thought improvements

First change, the most visible at first sight, the design of the DATS has been completely redesigned. The components are now integrated in an Aluminium housing, much stronger than the previous one. In addition, optional brackets allow the DATS V3 to be mounted under a desk or on a test bench, saving valuable space.

On the operating side, there is no need to look for a calibration resistor, all components are now integrated in the housing and calibration is done automatically after connecting the test cables. Test cables that have also been improved since they are now detachable, insulated and equipped with banana plugs. Of course, it is also possible to use other test cables. Finally, a USB-B connector has been added, rather than an integrated USB cable, allowing, as with test cables, to be modified.

The internal circuits have been completely redesigned and improved to offer greater accuracy and provide higher output power. Thus, it is possible to perform measurements at a higher level to minimize the possibility of noise or vibration affecting the results. Many components have been modified for models with tighter tolerances to minimize the margin of error caused by the variance of a component. Even the calibration resistance now has a tolerance of 0.1%.

For the software, the real strength of DATS, not only measures the impedance and parameters of the tested loudspeaker with great precision, but is also able to perform linearity tests to observe parameter changes according to the chosen level. The linearity test automatically performs multiple loudspeaker scans at increasing or decreasing levels while saving the results of each test for comparison. The DATS V3 is also capable of measuring the true value of inductors, capacitors and resistors and can function as a signal generator and oscilloscope to measure weak electrical signals (line level only).

T/S Parameters measurements

The DATS V3 quickly and accurately measures the Thiele & Small parameters of a loudspeaker. Simply connect the transducer to the device using the test cables and click on the Measure Free-Air Parameters button and the impedance magnitude will be displayed on the graph with the measured values Re, Fs, Qts, Qes, Qes, Qms and Le. You can then add a mass to the diaphragm or mount the loudspeaker in a test box and click on Measure V(as) to obtain mechanical parameters such as Vas or Mms.

Enclosure tuning verifications

When your loudspeaker is mounted in a box, the DATS V3 allows you to simply check the general agreement of your system for open boxes or the Q value for closed boxes, using the Measure Free Air Parameters button. The system will perform a quick scan and trace the impedance magnitude to facilitate verification of your system's tuning.

Verify crossover wiring and performance

Once your speaker is completed, you can start an impedance scan to measure the overall impedance of the system. A quick comparison of the measured impedance against the modelled impedance allows you to ensure that your filter is wired and working properly.

Inductor measurements

The inductance and DC resistance of a coil are measured with a single click. The DATS V3 is accurate from 0.05mH to 100mH.

Capacitor measurements

As a precision capacitance meter, the DATS V3 is in a class of its own. In just a few seconds, it measures all the electrical characteristics of a capacitor, including capacity, equivalent series resistance, resistance Q and even loss angle. It is capable of accurately measuring capacities from 0.002µF to 10000µF.

Resistor measurements

The DATS V3 is of course also able to measure a resistance and trace its impedance. This allows you to see to what extent your resistances are non-inductive. These measurements are accurate from 0.002Ω to 10000Ω.

Use under Windows 10 requires authorizing access to the virtual microphone, this operation requires administrator privileges.

Cet appareil m'avait été recommandé par un ami suite à un problème avec ma carte son. Cet appareil est très simple d'utilisation. Je m'en sers pour les mesures d'impédance et des paramètres T&S des haut-parleurs et il s'avère extrêmement efficace et d'une excellente précision. Je m'en sert aussi pour la mesure des self et des condensateurs avec une grande facilité et il me donne des résultats de mesures complets avec tous les paramètres associés (RSE, facteur de qualité...). Le logiciel gratuit à télécharger est très complet et pratique.

Windows 10
J'ai cet appareil depuis 3 ans, j'en étais totalement satisfait, jusqu'à ce que Windows 10 me soit imposé pour mon PC. Après avoir téléchargé le programme pour le réinstaller (DATS_V3_setup.exe), ça fonctionne, mais pas parfaitement. Rien qu'en faisant le test des câbles en court-circuit, au dessus de 10Khz, la courbe est totalement irrégulière, faite de creux et de bosses, pas trop normal je pense. Vivement que Dayton Audio propose une amélioration à son produit.

Problème de fonctionnement
J'ai posté hier un avis concernant le fonctionnement problématique de cet appareil sous Windows. Je n'avais jamais pu le faire fonctionner.
Perdu pour perdu, j'ai donc décidé d'ouvrir le boitier pour voir si éventuellement une soudure aurait posé problème. Et je dois dire que j'ai bien fait ! Du coté circuit imprimé/coté soudure, j'ai aperçu des taches blanchâtres semblables à du sel, principalement autour et sur les divers connecteurs présents sur le circuit. En grattant délicatement ces tâches avec un ongle j'ai réussi à enlever ce genre de sel séché. Pour être sûr de bien tout nettoyer j'ai passé un pinceau imbibé d'acétone. Le circuit fut alors impeccable.
Le circuit remonté dans sa boite à alors fonctionné correctement tout de suite.
J'en ai déduit un problème de production, mais suis étonné que ce produit n'ait pas été testé avant la mise en vente. D'autres appareils doivent certainement être dans ce cas.
Si il avait été possible d'insérer une photo ici, ça aurait été très parlant.
