With the iDSD Diablo 2, iFi Audio is offering a portable DAC and dual-mono headphone amplifier with an output power of up to 5180mW and support for signals up to 32bit 768kHz PCM, DSD512 and MQA. It is equipped with a Qualcomm Bluetooth 5.4 chip, supports the new aptX Lossless codec and has been designed to be compatible with xMEMS speaker technology.
The predecessor of the Diablo 2 was the first to support xMEMS solid-state microdriver technology, and this headphone amplifier follows in its footsteps. This new technology requires certain technical features from the amplifier to be compatible, such as a high output voltage and a specially configured 4.4mm jack port. This method offers significant benefits in return.
Firstly, the mechanical response of this type of loudspeaker is just 15µsec, 150 times faster than a conventional loudspeaker. What's more, they have a flat phase response of 2°, giving ultra-precise, spatialised sound. Finally, the silicon used as the diaphragm in xMEMS loudspeakers is much more rigid than the plastic often used in more conventional loudspeakers, providing greater resistance and much better midrange reproduction.
The Diablo 2 has been designed to drive even the most power-hungry helmets. In fact, it has 3 modes to adapt to all situations. First, there's the Normal mode, mainly useful for headphones, which are generally equipped with low-demand speakers. Next comes Turbo mode, designed for medium-sensitivity headphones. Finally, Nitro mode, with an output level of 19.2V, for the most demanding headphones.
Thanks to the use of a Qualcomm Bluetooth 5.4 QCC518x chip, the Diablo 2 is able to support the new aptX Lossless codec, which offers a maximum data rate of 1200kbps. In comparison, aptX Adaptive offers a maximum bit rate of 420kbps, while LDAC offers a bit rate of 990kbps.
Examining the Diablo 2's front panel, you'll find a new volume lock button, next to the volume control, which prevents accidental changes during transport. You'll also notice that power and data input via USB-C have been separated to ensure a perfectly clean signal.
The Diablo 2 features PureWave, Servoless DirectDrive, OptimaLoop and Advanced Jitter Reduction technologies, delivering exceptionally pure, detailed sound.
PureWave's fully symmetrical dual-mono circuit improves clarity by separating channels and reducing noise. DirectDrive eliminates the need for coupling capacitors, ensuring a cleaner sound. OptimaLoop uses multiple custom feedback circuits in the amplifier stage, refining gain control and reducing distortion. Finally, the femto GMT clock using Smart cache memory minimizes phase noise.
The Diablo 2 can be powered by battery or mains. Battery power provides clean, stable DC power, avoiding the problems associated with mains power, such as dips, spikes and noise-generating RFI/EMI pollution. However, to ensure that mains power can still be used satisfactorily, the Diablo 2 is equipped with the iPower2 power supply featuring Active Noise Cancellation II technology, which effectively cancels all incoming EMI and RFI noise, making it over 10 times quieter than most audiophile power supplies.
