Passive Radiator Aluminium 18.2Hz Ø38.1cm
The RSS390-PR from Dayton Audio is a 38.1cm diameter passive radiator from the Reference Series. Combined with an active speaker, it will allow you to enjoy a richer sound in the low frequencies and potentially extend the bandwidth of your loudspeaker.
The subwoofer has an excellent design quality, with an anodised aluminium diaphragm and a cast iron chassis, just like the subwoofers of the same range. Thus, they are visually similar and will fit together perfectly.
Each passive radiator uses the unique SMS (Sandwiched Mass Structure) design to keep the majority of the mass centered between the suspension and the spider, ensuring good linearity. The RSS390-PR's mass is also adjustable using the weights provided, to fit most subwoofers.
The Dayton Audio RSS390-PR comes with 7 weights in disc form, allowing you to vary certain parameters of the passive radiator. The table below shows the impact of adding weights on these values.

The passive radiator (or passive loudspeaker) fits into a box with an active loudspeaker. This passive radiator, although it may at first glance look like a "classic" loudspeaker, in fact has no engine parts. Thus, there is no coil, magnet and power supply in its design. In the same way, it will not be electrically connected to a power amplifier.
To diffuse sound, the passive radiator will use the air pressures and depressions induced by the active loudspeaker in the cabinet to vibrate its diaphragm to deliver deep bass. Its resonant frequency is determined by its mass and the amount of air contained in the cabinet. It is therefore possible to vary its resonance frequency on many models and tune it to the speaker by adding mass.
