Dayton Audio's RSS460-PR passive radiator is ideal for a DIY project to create a subwoofer in association with an active loudspeaker. It features a thick black anodized aluminum cone and a rigid cast aluminum frame, this passive speaker is therefore aesthetically similar to the brand's reference subwoofer series. Its design incorporates an SMS (Sandwich Mass System) for greater linearity while minimizing angular torque. Weighted disks are included for simple and efficient adjustment of this passive radiator.
The RSS460-PR passive radiator is useful for enjoying a more powerful, richer low-frequency sound. It extends the bandwidth of a loudspeaker and gives a boost to your active loudspeakers to reach lower frequencies more easily.
The passive radiator must be integrated in a box with an active loudspeaker. This passive radiator, although at first it may look like a "classic" loudspeaker, does not in fact have any engine part. Thus, one will not find in its design of coil, magnet and power supply. Similarly, it will not be electrically connected to a power amplifier.
To diffuse sound, the passive radiator will use the air pressures and depressions induced by the active loudspeaker in the body to vibrate its membrane and produce sound, thus providing deep bass. Its resonance frequency is determined by its mass and the air contained in the enclosure. The resonance frequency can therefore be varied on many models and tuned to the speaker by adding mass.
Tip : As a general rule, the passive radiator(s) should have at least double the displacement of air (Vd) as the active woofer(s)/subwoofer(s) in the system.
