iFi Audio's Hip DAC returns in an improved version, the Hip DAC 3. A practical and efficient DAC and headphone amplifier combo, this new version offers improved design and sound performance. The Hip DAC 3 is equipped with a Burr Brown DAC chip, a 16-core XMOS USB interface and an amplifier stage capable of developing comfortable power.
Two USB-C ports now simplify cable management: one for audio signal transmission, the other for charging. In addition, a switch on the underside activates the brand's iEMatch technology, optimizing use with high-sensitivity headphones and earphones.
On the component side, the circuit features new metal-film capacitors for improved frequency response, as well as an updated version of the GMT circuit, coupled with a new crystal oscillator, further reducing phase noise for pure sound.
With its sturdy, elegant and compact aluminum case, the Hip DAC 3 slips discreetly into a pocket or bag. It replaces the DAC and amplifier of smartphones, tablets and computers. Simply connect it via USB-C, plug in your favorite headphones and enjoy rich, dynamic sound.
The Hip DAC 3 integrates a digital/analog conversion stage equipped with a Burr Brown chip, for which iFi Audio now benefits from extensive expertise to ensure optimum performance. This is accompanied by a 16-core XMOS USB interface, programmed by iFi Audio to optimize sound quality.
The Hip DAC 3 features a fully balanced circuit that minimizes signal distortion for purer sound. It incorporates high-end components such as an iFi OV custom OPA, a Texas Instruments low-noise power supply IC and a high-quality analog volume potentiometer.
The Hip DAC 3's amplifier stage is capable of delivering 400mW of power at 32Ω (balanced output), making it compatible with a wide range of headphones. What's more, it efficiently powers high-impedance headphones with an output voltage of 6.3V at 600Ω (balanced output).
The amplification stage is equipped with a switchable gain, called PowerMatch, to ensure optimum power regardless of the headphones used.
A switch on the underside of the unit activates iEMatch technology, optimizing output for high-sensitivity headphones and earphones. This reduces hiss, improves detail and dynamic range, and also extends the volume control range.
The XBass function, which can be activated or deactivated, enhances bass without altering the midrange, particularly useful for use with open earphones or headphones. It works in analog mode, avoiding DSP alterations.
The Hip DAC 3 supports PCM and DXD audio streams up to 32bit 384kHz, as well as DSD up to DSD256. Full MQA decoding is also supported, enabling you to take advantage of this type of file, aimed at providing sound reproduction as close as possible to studio recording. On either side of the volume knob, a pair of LEDs change color according to the file format currently being played.
The asynchronous design of the USB interface guarantees jitter-free data transfer. A separate USB-C charging port enables use while charging, preserving a path for the pure audio signal.
The iFi Audio Hip DAC3 provides two outputs, in unbalanced 3.5mm jack and balanced 4.4mm jack formats. The 3.5mm jack output uses the brand's S-Balanced circuitry, minimizing crosstalk and distortion.
The Hip DAC 3's 2200mAh battery provides up to 12h of autonomy, depending on volume and headphone power requirements. A USB-C OTG and USB-A to USB cable are included.
