The Moondrop Cosmo headphone is a high-quality planar magnetic headphone that is the outcome of years of research and development by Moondrop.
Planar magnetic headphones use a magnetic field generated parallel to the diaphragm via a symmetrical array of magnets. The signals then generate an ampere force perpendicular to the printed circuit on the membrane to move it. Moondrop takes this technology a step further, offering a Ø100mm nanoscopic membrane coupled with a whole host of innovations to ensure uniform vibration.
Unlike traditional planar magnetic headphones, Cosmo headphones feature an ultra-wide 100 mm diaphragm with Full Drive Technology (FDT). The whole vibrating surface of the diaphragm is uniformly covered by efficient drive circuits and enclosed in a magnetic field. This technology delivers more evenly distributed vibrations than traditional planar magnetic headphones, and is comparable to electrostatic headphones. The ultra-thin, low-voltage diaphragm, with a thickness of 500 nm, meets the requirements of both a wider frequency range and a faster response speed, delivering exceptional sound quality. For its part, the highly elastic pure silver circuit, composed of an ultra-thin silver film, guarantees high efficiency, low heat loss and uniform voltage.
Moondrop has developed a proprietary technology called FDT to better drive the diaphragm of its headphones. Conventional magnetic planar headphones have a circuit that is only really effective at vibrating the center of the diaphragm, leaving the extremities of the diaphragm as a dead zone. Full Drive Technology (FDT) solves this problem with a unique circuit structure covering the entire diaphragm, enabling uniform diaphragm vibration of the same order as in electrostatic headphones.
To go with this circuit, Moondrop adopts an array of 36 extra-large neodymium N52 magnetic strips to generate a planar magnetic field covering the entire vibrating surface of the diaphragm, optimized by FEA analysis to ensure a uniform and efficient distribution of the magnetic field over the vibrating surface.
Cosmo headphone incorporate a principle of double equalization in its design: after the diaphragm is molded, the stress it undergoes is released and then equalized a second time. This additional process reduces the non-linear distortion of the diaphragm at high pressure by at least 95%. Cosmo headphones also incorporate a three-dimensional waveguide structure on each side of the diaphragm, considerably reducing phase cancellation caused by the reflection and diffraction of medium- and high-frequency sound waves in the front and rear cavities. The result is softer, more delicate highs and a more open, natural soundscape.
The Cosmo's frequency response curve is perfectly consistent with the HRTF (head-related transfer function), and the level of non-linear distortion is less than 0.05%. Distortion that remains extremely low even at high pressure levels.
