The latest addition to the SBC Raspberry Pi range, the Raspberry PI 5 4Gb offers a number of improvements over its predecessor, the Rasberry Pi 4. Overall performance is two to three times better than its predecessor, and graphics rendering has been greatly enhanced. This model uses the same basic features that made the Raspberry 4 such a success, but with completely redesigned connectors.
The main improvements on the Rasberry Pi 5 are a BCM2712 system-on-a-chip (SoC) with a new quad-core ARM A76 processor (ARM v8 - 64-bit - 2.4GHz) and a Video Core VII GPU for exceptional graphics performance. It is able to stream 4K 60fps video to two screens simultaneously via its micro-HDMI ports and supports HDR. In terms of connectivity, it now features a PCIe 2.0 FPC connection, as well as an RTC connector for real-time clocking and a UART port for debugging. A power ON/OFF switch has been added to the PCB for greater convenience.
It also retains the features of its predecessor, such as its LPDDR4 RAM, 2.4/5.0GHz wireless networking, Bluetooth 5.0 (BLE), Gigabit Ethernet, USB 3.0 and PoE (the PoE HAT module is sold separately).
Please note, however, that the latest version of the operating system (Bookworm) is recommended to take full advantage of the Raspberry Pi 5's capabilities. The Pi 5's power supply is now a USB-C 5V 5A port, so we also recommend using the new Raspberry Pi 27W USB power supply.
Older Raspberry HAT PoE and PoE+ are no longer compatible with the PI5 version due to the new connector layout.
After 7 years of development, the RP1 chip has been integrated into the Raspberry Pi 5 for greatly optimized I/O performance. It's thanks to the integration of this component that the Raspberry Pi 5 offers overall performance 2 to 3 times better than its predecessor. Whether used as a multimedia server, audio player, programming tool or even for browsing the Internet with numerous tabs open, navigation will remain fluid for an unprecedented user experience for this type of device.
At its heart is a 64-bit, quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor, running at 2.4 GHz, with 512 KB of L2 cache per core and a shared 2 MB L3 cache. It allows more instructions per clock (IPC) and less energy per instruction. The Raspberry Pi 5 is therefore faster and consumes less energy.
As the Raspberry Pi 5's I/O controller, it enables fast execution. Designed to be functionally very similar to the BCM2711, it guarantees a high degree of compatibility with older Raspberry Pi devices.
The Renesas DA9091 power management IC integrates 8 separate switched-mode power supplies to generate the different voltages required by the Raspberry Pi 5, in particular to power the BM2712 and the RP1.
