The Matrix MS-1 audio network player is an extremely complete streamer that forms part of the brand's M series along with the MP-1 preamplifier and MA-1 power amplifier. This new series features a new design, both in terms of appearance and internal structure. Indeed, the MS-1 network player features a balanced structure with a combo of AKM AK4499EX + AK4191 chips per channel, enabling it to support high-resolution PCM up to 24bit 768kHz, native DSD up to DSD512 and MQA streams. An attractive display with touch-sensitive controls and the MA Player solution, coupled with the MA Remote App 4.0, provide a pleasant user experience. Numerous digital inputs (USB-B, Toslink optical, SPDIF coaxial, USB-A storage, SSD slot) and analog inputs (XLR balanced, RCA and phono) enable the Streamer MS-1 to be integrated into any audio system configuration. There's also an I2S LVDS input and output on HDMI port, a 10MHz clock connector and a trigger input and output. As for line outputs, the essentials are there, with stereo RCA and stereo balanced XLR. With the MS-1, Matrix unveils an extremely versatile, high-performance network player that will delight the most demanding audiophiles.
The MS-1 is the first product of the brand based on the AKM AK4499EX+AK4191 high-end DAC chip solution. Each AKM chip combo works independently per channel for an unrivalled level of precision. The MS-1's architecture is therefore balanced, with dual-mono DAC operation. This enables the MS-1 to process signals over a wide dynamic range and retain the finest details of the original signal. It supports high-resolution PCM 24bit 768kHz, native DSD up to DSD512 and MQA sampling rates.
The soul of the MS-1 network player lies largely in its MA Player interface, a Linux-based software optimized and specially developed for audio applications. On the MS-1, the on-screen interface gives you access to all the information and commands essential to a pleasant user experience. As well as being ergonomic, this interface is also aesthetically pleasing.
To complete the MS-1 interface, Matrix Audio gives you access to its MA Remote App 4.0. This app lets you control your streamer remotely, whether from your Android or IOS smartphone. This app also gives you access to numerous streaming services, as well as to the configuration of your Hi-Fi device.
The MS-1 streamer gives you access to a multitude of audio sources. These include numerous local network streaming services such as Airplay 2, UPnP, DLNA, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, as well as high-resolution online streaming services such as HighRES AUDIO, Tidal and Quobuz. Of course, you can also take advantage of the many existing online radio stations (Radio Paradise, VTuner, etc.) and your locally stored files on SSD, USB-Disk and local NAS.
On the rear of the MS-1, numerous digital inputs allow you to connect it to any type of source, such as a CD player, video game console, TV and, of course, your computer, tablet and smartphone.
An asynchronous PCM oversampling and DSD conversion system enables all audio data to be processed digitally. Thanks to asynchronous resampling and interpolation operations, unwanted noise is isolated and detail enhanced. The data is then converted to DSD, enhancing the density and depth of the final sound reproduction. Different configurations of oversampling processing and conversion between PCM and DSD are available to let you experiment with the possible differences in the final rendering of your audio signal. You can adjust these settings according to your preferences, but also according to the type of music being played.
To complete the MS-1's digital interface, Matrix has incorporated an I2S LVDS input and output port into its streamer. The I2S LVDS output port lets you connect the MS-1 to an external DAC to try out other audio system configurations and modify your listening experience. Signal from sources connected to the MS-1's various analog and phono inputs can also be retrieved via the I2S LVDS port.
The complete MS-1 streamer features several analog inputs: balanced stereo XLR, stereo RCA and phono. The phono input supports MM and MC cells for compatibility with any vinyl turntable. The incoming signal on the analog inputs is converted into a digital signal using a high-performance ADC and PCM filter.
A high-precision internal clock with low phase noise allows extremely low jitter of 45fs in real time. However, if you have a more accurate external 10MHz holorge, you can still use it with the MS-1.
A LAN network port is complemented by an SFP port, providing high-frequency interference isolation via a fiber-optic connection. Fiber optics provide electrical isolation between your network devices and the MS-1, ensuring interference-free sound.
An NVMe SSD slot means you don't need an external hard drive. Storage can be carried out via network sharing, or by copying and pasting from external storage to SSD storage using the MA Remote application.
Matrix chose to integrate two high-power toroidal transformers into the MS-1. These toroidal transformers feature square copper wires for greater available conductive surface area, higher current capacity and lower resistance. This results in better transient response and a certain richness in low frequencies. Mundorf M-Lytic AG series filter capacitors and a battery of low-noise LDOs provide a clean, stable power supply to each MS-1 circuit unit.
