First of all I would like to thank Audiophonics for the prompt delivery and exemplary packaging! It was delivered to me in Bucharest between Christmas and the 31'st.
This DAC is nothing short of amazing. I haven't heard anything like it before.
I can't find a single drawback to it's sound, the stage is deep and wide, the timbre is spot on, dynamics are off the charts with big swings and a really potent bass. I've always thought that the bass can't be very tight in my room because I have no treatment installed, but this DAC proved that it was the source that was keeping my system back in this regard. I don't mean to say that room treatment wouldn't help further, but to some this is not an option.
All of the aspects I've stated are impressive, however, the separation of instruments and voices is on a different level and this makes music make sense.
With this DAC I found that songs I thought were poorly recorded were just not reproduced well by my previous DAC.
Regarding the burn in period that lot's of reviewers mention, it sounded great right out of the box and I was happy with my purchase, but it did improve in the first three days.
Build quality is impressive, but the remote is of poor quality. Luckily I don't use it since I have a separate preamp. Regarding the preamp, it sounds a lot better with a preamp, but this might be system dependent. Going into my preamp if I adjust the volume from the Gustard the sound quality is not affected at all so the volume control inside it is good, but If I take my preamp out of the chain the sound is downgraded from all points of view. My preamp (Benchmark HPA 4) has no gain in the range that I use it in, but it has input and output buffering and it makes any DAC I connect to it sound better. If you've never tried a preamp you will still enjoy the upgrade compared to other DAC's connected directly to a power amp, but if you want an impressive upgrade further down the line get a good preamp.
Simply amazing!
